The days are getting more filled with sunshine and soon those determined little vibrant sprouts of Vermont's herbs and flora will be springing forth! For centuries Vermonters have cultivated with love and care these valuable resources to love and care for their friends, family and community. Since 2009, Urban Moonshine's founder, Jovial King, has built her business drawing on her roots growing up in rural Vermont and her observations of the challenges faced in beneficially dealing with our potentially stress-filled contemporary environments. Herbal bitters and tonics in expertly-crafted formulas , she knows, can bring the power of plants into the busy lives of modern consumers, so Jovial seeks to encourage discussion, education and introduction of herbal products to current and future generations.
Initially debuting at local farmers' markets, Urban Moonshine quickly moved to a larger space in the Chace Mill in Burlington, Vermont, and is now growing their business into the local region and beyond. Organic ingredients are at the heart of Urban Moonshine's business practice. "Our product line is certified organic across the board, and we work closely with a Vermont-based farming cooperative to source a large portion of our ingredients ... we focus on building a healthy supply chain by buying certified organic ingredients; this leads to more acreage of farmland cultivating organic herbs and decreases the amount of pesticides and herbicides in the environment ... we have always had to go beyond Vermont's borders for ingredients not grown commercially here, but designed the bulk of our formulas to take advantage of the herbs that grow well here in Vermont. We work closely with a dedicated group of inspiring organic herb farmers that grow as much of what we need as possible."
Urban Moonshine is particularly excited about the addition to Lantman's shelves of one of its newest products: Cider Vinegar Bitters. "The Cider Vinegar Bitters is our very first product to be made using organic apple cider vinegar as the herbal extracting liquid instead of the organic cane alcohol we use in the rest of our products. It's still super bitter and effective, but provides an option for those who want to avoid alcohol."
Such valued Vermont traditions as apple cider vinegar are key to this local Vermont company. "We're rooted in Vermont. The herbalism we espouse embraces herbs that many Vermonters are very familiar with - Dandelion, Burdock, Motherwort, Elderberry etc, and have been growing, harvesting and preserving for generations. We're using those same simple techniques you can use in your kitchen, just on a larger scale to reach more people and sourcing raw material from Vermont in a meaningful way to do it."
